C RONALDO: Relief for the Goat That Did Not Roar
Al-Nassr, inspired by Cristiano Ronaldo, gained a point against Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League courtesy of a fortunate equalizer deep into stoppage time.
Ronaldo was honored before the game with a special ‘900 goals’ shirt and tifo following his most recent record-breaking exploits, but he was unable to add to his score in a first half devoid of quality and clear-cut chances.
The Portugal star’s greatest chance came from a free kick that went harmlessly over the crossbar. Marcelo Brozovic had a chance for Ronaldo’s side, but his attempt was blocked by Edouard Mendy, while Roberto Firmino had a chance at the other end with a curling shot that forced Bento to make a flying save.
More drama ensued in the second half, with Al-Nassr’s penalty appeals waved away when Talisca fell down in the penalty area, before Franck Kessie hammered an unstoppable rocket into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area, thanks to some excellent link-up play from Ivan Toney on debut. Al-Nassr attempted to counterattack but had to wait until deep into stoppage time to salvage a point. Ronaldo’s team also required a huge stroke of luck when Sultan Al-Ghannam’s cross deflected off Bassam Mohammed Alhurayji and went past goalkeeper Mendy.
Despite not being on the winning side, Kessie’s remarkable goal earned him the MVP award in a lackluster match. His strike from the edge of the box left the goalkeeper helpless and defined the game. The hosts’ equalizer from an Al-Ahli defender in the 99th minute highlighted their struggles in attack, with Al-Nassr’s forwards failing to trouble the opposition. Ronaldo appeared off-form after the international break, while his teammates Mane and Talisca also lacked quality. Al-Nassr must improve significantly to be a title contender this season.
Ronaldo made history with one billion social media followers, celebrating the milestone with gratitude towards fans for their shared passion.
