Their first major achievement was the FA Cup in 1909. They have since won twenty (20) top-tier league titles, thirteen (13) FA Cups, six (6) League Cups, and a record twenty-one (21) FA Community Shields. In addition, they have won three (3) European Cups/UEFA Champions Leagues, the UEFA Europa League and UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Among the cup accumulated also include the UEFA Super Cup, the Intercontinental Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Matt Busby Babes and the United Trinity
Matt Busby was appointed manager in 1945 and assembled a young team with an average age of twenty-two. This team, nicknamed the Busby Babes, won consecutive league titles in the 1950s and was the first English club to compete in the European Cup. Busby lost eight players in the Munich plane disaster and rebuilt the club around star players George Best, Denis Law, and Bobby Charlton, known as the United Trinity.
The Alex Ferguson Era
They won two more league titles and became the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968. Manchester United struggled to achieve continuous success after the retirement of Matt Busby. The advent of Alex Ferguson, who became the club’s longest-serving and most successful manager, had the longest success streak of the club. He won thirty-eight (38) trophies between 1986 and 2013. These are thirteen (13) leagues, five FA Cups, and two (2) Champions League titles. During the 1998-99 season, the club became the first in English football history to win the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League.
In 2016-17, they became one of the five clubs to have won the original three main UEFA Champions League competitions when they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho
The team is also famous for its youth development and legendary players like George Best, Eric Cantona, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
